Julien Poydras will, 1822.

Photocopy of typescript transcription of Poydras's will in which he provides for the manumission of his slaves in twenty-five years and a pension for those over sixty years old at that time. The will also records his bequest to Charity Hospital and Poydras Female Orphan Asylum, his establishment of an academy in Pointe Coupee Parish, and his donation of $30,000 each to Pointe Coupee Parish and West Baton Rouge Parish, the income from which dowries for the poor females of each parish were to be provided.

Planter, merchant, and philanthropist Julien Poydras was born near Nantes, France in 1746. He arrived in New Orleans ca. 1768 and settled in Pointe Coupee Parish. In addition to his store and gin on False River, he owned five plantations in Pointe Coupee Parish, one in West Baton Rouge Parish, and over 500 slaves. He also had real estate in New Orleans. The Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, was founded as L'Hôpital des Pauvres de la Charité in 1736, the bequest of shipbuilder Jean Louis. Subsequent buildings were erected in 1743, 1785, 1815, 1832, and 1939. The hospital, which was the city's only facility for the mentally ill until a state asylum opened in 1848, admitted men, women, and children throughout the 1840s.
